G.G. Shitface (literally)

In keeping with the theme of the previous post (that is, how shock 'art' is fucking stupid and not art at all, merely an idiotic plea for attention), here is an excerpt from an article by Christopher Hume from the Toronto Star.

"When the 24-year-old Ontario College of Art and Design student[, Thorarinn Ingi Jonsson,] placed a fake explosive device – he called it a "sculpture" – inside the main entrance of the Royal Ontario Museum last week, he confirmed something that everyone outside the art world has known for awhile [sic], namely that art has lost its power to shock. [...] Jonsson's fake bomb didn't bring down the museum, but it marked the final passing of an artistic era. What author Robert Hughes called the shock of the new has become the refrain of familiarity."

i believe in limits. infinity does not exist.

Calvin Johnson song

This is the deepest I've heard. It's posted on the website of Karl Blau's Kelp Monthly thing, where you can get a subscription to a monthly package of stuff he compiles (songs of his friends and him and other amazing things).

Yesterday one Christopher N. Hubbarde Esquire was at my apartment visiting me. In the afternoon we took a walk, heading north up Spadina and past Casa Loma to the huge crazy hill south of St. Clair. It was gleaming with snow from the weirdly bright sunlight. We trudged through the snowy slush sidewalks to get there and then explored the hill. Beside a rubbish bin we spotted two toboggan devices -- one real plastic toboggan (complete with broken brakes) and one makeshift big plastic container that had obviously been used for the same purpose -- and, since they were ostensibly abandoned, we opted to adopt the former. The hill is too crazy and steep in most places but we tried sliding down one little area and it was fun, though only Christopher did it and only once. Then we continued on our walk whilst I pulled the little toboggan along behind us. Christopher later noticed a street sign that read "Maximum 40" on the ground by the side of the road which had ostensibly broken off its post. In an unusual bout of mischievousness he picked it up and brought it along back to my apartment, though we worried about authority figures spotting us the whole way. We made it. Now there's a weird toboggan and big sign on my balcony waiting to be enjoyed.

That night Lindsay told me that someone who took down a stop sign once got charged for murder because their act removed the sign's traffic regulation function. Crazy shit. All the same, it's funny how relatively ridiculously tame our acts of questionable legality are.

ATTENTION REELCODDLERS

so, the reelcod supersession recording is nearly complete but i need song titles. it's gonna roughly be 12 songs giveortake, divided in two parts to fit on CDR. so, in keeping with the collective collaborative concept of the session, (veiled as an attempt to get more of you posting on zéé "blög") i'm asking YOU to come up with the titles. come up with whatever, you were there & you heard the "songs" i'm talking about. to keep it fair, & also in keeping with the collab, i'll punch the titles into the burroughs cut-up machine (found here) & voilà... we have song titles for each song created by all of US! leave your titles in the comments section of this entry.

also, an example of the cut-up method, everything i just said cut-up for shitz & gigglez:

Toronto Railway Company Transfers (1892)

look how beautiful toronto transit transfers were in 1892. i wonder when and why this attention to detail and elegance expired? despite how reproduction and design and everything is easier with today's technology, everything looks so aesthetically lazy and vapid. it's insulting, in fact, the way our sight is corroded with flashy graphics in advertisements and shit at all times, and now there seems to be no use for simple elegant lettering like this because everything is photographs and colour and bullshit but no subtle dignity and beauty in what i look at. if transfers looked like this i'd feel like i was riding a subway of gold.

this is from the website of Steve Munro, the famed public transit activist, http://stevemunro.ca/
